Following the conclusion of World War I, there was groundswell of support throughout the American numismatic community for the minting of a new coin to commemorate the restoration of peace. Simultaneously, the passage of the Pittman Act of 1918 required the Treasury Department to produce millions of new silver dollars to replace the more than 270 million silver dollars that were melted and sold as bullion to the British immediately after the war. The silver dollar that was designed to accomplish both of these tasks has come to be known as the Peace Dollar.
Peace Dollars were minted from 1921 through 1928, and again from 1934 through 1935, in Philadelphia (no mintmark), San Francisco (“S” mintmark), and Denver (“D”). Each Peace Dollar is composed of .900 fine silver, yielding a total silver content of .77344 troy ounces per coin, and measures 38.1mm in diameter. To arrive at a design, the federal Commission of Fine Arts held a competition among some of the country’s greatest sculptors and medalists which was won by a young Italian immigrant named Anthony de Francisci whose submission was modeled upon his wife Teresa. The obverse of the Peace Dollar depicts the strong profile of a crowned Lady Liberty, facing left, hair flowing behind her. The reverse captures an American eagle at rest upon a rocky outcropping, peering at the sun through a pattern of its rays. The eagle stands upon a rock and upon that rock is written a single word: Peace.

" Got one of these, a 1922. Can't tell the difference in condition between it and the BU 1923-D I bought from Provident a few months ago. Not a coin expert, but it's every bit as brilliant and free of all but bag marks as the BU one I have."

" I tested the waters with a few of the AU Peace Dollars...and don't get me wrong...I LOVE PROVIDENT....but IMHO, the few I received were not AU...but XF...and all were 1922s. Ive been collecting coins for nearly 30 years and these were not AU but XF. Maybe inventory was low...I dunno. I love Provident and will continue to shop here...but be weary of AU advertised coins. Spring for BU if you truly want quality."

" I ordered ten (10) of these "Almost Unirculated" and ten (10) "Brilliant Uncirculated" for my boys. They were all absolutely stunning. It took close inspection to distinguish the AU from the BU. Provident seems to grade very conservatively. Your coins will be, on average, a little better or quite a bit better than you expect. I'm sure it varies based on inventory. Also, the price was actually better than the LCS i go to in Nevada, which has really good prices. In other words, this is a great price on some really beautiful coins. Why can't our gov't make beautiful coins like these anymore?!"

" I just received my order of Peace silver dollars. There is a reason people want to own these coins beside wealth protection, they are works of art in an era when art is like "the kings new clothes", non-existent. I like the Morgans better but these are beautiful in their own right."
Paul on 12/10/2012
" Ordered 20 of these coins and was extremely satisfied with the condition. Absolutely as advertised ! FYI, also ordered Morgans and some Perth coins (Lunar II series) that were just as impressive ! Provident does a great job ! "
