The only break in this time was five years from 1873 to 1878 between those two designs. When the Peace Dollar came along, American silver dollar coins had been out of production for nearly 20 years.

Obverse

On the obverse face of the coin is a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty as designed by Anthony de Francisci. The image is a peaceful rendition of Liberty with soft features and a tall crown reflective of rays of sunshine. Included in the design field is the word Liberty, the national motto of In God We Trust, and a date mark along the bottom.

Reverse

The reverse side of Peace Dollar Silver Coins includes the image of an American bald eagle at rest. The bird rests on its perch with its wings at its side and a stoic gaze at it looks out over a new day with rays of sunshine emanating from the lower-right field of the design element. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, One Dollar, and the word Peace at the bottom.

Peace Dollar silver coins were introduced by the United States Mint in December 1921 to replace the Morgan Dollar silver coins. The nation desired peace after the horrors of World War and the Morgan Dollar design was no longer in favor. The reverse with the American bald eagle at rest was reflective of the nations hopes for peace.
