The feature film 300 may have helped popularize in modern popular culture the Spartans of King Leonidas in their valiant last stand against the Persian Army in Ancient Greece, but the bravery and bold attitude of these warriors has been talked about through the ages. The Molon Labe Series from Intaglio Mint offers several designs from the ancient Battle of Thermopylae on silver rounds. Right now, you can buy the Molon Labe 1 oz Silver Round Type V online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The phrase molon labe is an Ancient Greek phrase that directly translates as having come, take. Over the course of human history though, the phrase has been commonly translated into English as come and take them. The Greek biographer Plutarch recorded that King Leonidas of Sparta responded with this phrase when King Xerxes I of the Persian Empire when the latter demanded the Spartans lay down their weapons and let the Persians pass.
Obverse
On the obverse of 1 oz Silver Molon Labe Type V Rounds, the Type V design from the Intaglio Mint is featured. Here, a Spartan warrior fights on despite being wounded to slay one of his Persian enemies. With an arrow in his thigh, the Spartan grabs his enemy by the throat and prepares the thrust the end of a broken spear into the man.
Reverse
The Intaglio Mint logo features on the reverse of all Molon Labe Silver Rounds. The logo is set in the very center and takes the shape of a Romanesque column as a marble I. Other elements to this side of the silver round include radial sunbursts in the background and a hammered finish to the outer design field.
History
King Leonidas led a small army of just 7,000 men in total, anchored by 300 of his elite Spartans, to the hot gates at Thermopylae. The goal was to try and slow the advance of the Persian Army, which historical records suggest numbered 150,000 warriors. Through three days of battle, Leonidas was able to hold off the Persian advance long enough for the rest of the Greek city-states to amass an army behind them.
