In the world of coin certification, two names stand tall. One of those two is the NGC, otherwise known as the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. Founded in 1987, the NGC is a third-party coin grading service that is independent of any private sovereign mint. With well over 58 million coins graded, they’re one of the most trusted names in the world of coin-grading providers. Learn more about NGC Gold Coins, right here at Provident Metals.
The NGC uses a grading scale called the Sheldon Scale. This scale grades coins from 1 to 70 with 70 being a perfect specimen. In theory, a coin with a grade of 70 is worth 70 times more than a coin with a grade of 1. This scale was created by Dr. William Sheldon in 1948, a renowned numismatist.
The NGC prefaces every grade they give out with two letters. These are defined as the following:
The NGC uses specific terms and labels to further identify and evaluate coinage. While some terms are industry standard and are used by others, the NGC also has terms specific to just the NGC.
The NGC has a simple and effective process to make sure every coin is graded properly and returned to you unharmed. The NGC receives your coin and then takes each individual coin under an extensive grading process. This includes examining the coin under a 5x magnification. At least two numismatists grade every single coin. Once the coin has received its grade, it goes under the encapsulation process. Each coin is packaged within an NGC protective slab indicating its grade. The coin and the accompanying capsule are shipped back to the owner of the coin.
