History
President Trump became the fourth candidate to face an assassination attempt while campaigning ahead of an election. The 1972 presidential campaign saw an attempt on the life of Democratic candidate George Wallace. While campaigning in Laurel, Maryland, Wallace was shot multiple times by Arthur Bremer. Though Wallace survived, he was left paralyzed from the waist down. This incident further emphasized the need for enhanced security for presidential hopefuls, even before they secured their party’s nomination.
