The Chinese Panda silver coins issued from 1983 to 1985 and again in 1987 and 1988 were proof specimens, not investment-grade bullion coins. The Chinese Mint adjusted the silver content and weight of the coins numerous times during this period. It was not until the 1989 release that the Chinese Panda coin was available as a standardized 1 Troy oz .999 pure silver coin. History

In 2016, the Chinese Mint switched the weight of measure for the Chinese Panda Silver and Gold coins to Grams. The 1 Troy oz silver coin became the 30 Gram silver coin. The Chinese mint stated this was done to bring the series in line with the nations use of the Metric system.
