One of the most popular silver bullion coins in the world today, the Chinese Panda Silver Coin debuted as a standard bullion coin in 1989 from the Chinese Mint. The Chinese Panda silver coins issued from 1983 to 1985 and again in 1987 and 1988 were proof specimens, not investment-grade bullion coins. The Chinese Mint adjusted the silver content and weight of the coins numerous times during this period. It was not until the 1989 release that the Chinese Panda coin was available as a standardized 1 Troy oz .999 pure silver coin. From 1989 to 2015, the coins were issued as 1 Troy oz specimens prior to the switch to Grams in 2016.

Obverse

On the obverse face of all Chinese Panda 1 oz Silver Coins is the Giant Panda species of bear that is native to Chinas central highlands. However, you will find that all date marks (except 2001-2002) have a distinctive image of the Giant Panda only used for that year.

Reverse

The reverse side of Chinese Panda 1 oz Silver Coins features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This design element has been a staple of the series in both silver and gold since both options were introduced. It has not been changed in the years since the series debuted.

History

In 2016, the Chinese Mint switched the weight of measure for the Chinese Panda Silver and Gold coins to Grams. The 1 Troy oz silver coin became the 30 Gram silver coin. The Chinese mint stated this was done to bring the series in line with the nations use of the Metric system.
