Obverse

On the obverse side of the Australian Koala 1 oz Silver Coin is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queens portrait is regularly updated on the obverse face of Australian denominations. The Australian Koalas feature either the 1998 design from Ian Rank-Broadley or the 2015 design from Jody Clark. Both images originally appeared on British coinage before featuring on Australian coins. The Ian Rank-Broadley design was used on Australian Koalas from 2007 to 2017 and the Jody Clark design since 2015.

Reverse

The reverse face of Australian Koala 1 oz Silver Coins bears the image of a koala. One of the many marsupial species native to the Australian continent, the koala is depicted in a new design element each year.

History

The Perth Mint was founded in 1899 as the third and final branch mint facility of the Royal Mint of England on the Australian continent. It was intended to serve alongside the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint. In 1965, when the Royal Australian Mint was founded as the new sovereign mint of an independent Australia, the Perth Mint was transferred to the state government of Western Australia as a state-owned entity.
