The Chinese Lunar Calendar runs on a 12-year cycle that repeats itself every 12 years. Each of the years in the cycle has been assigned an individual animal representative of the year, with the order in which those animals appear resulting from a Great Race. Ancient Chinese mythology suggests the Jade Emperor called a meeting of the worlds animals, and the 12 animals now depicted in the Zodiac are the ones that answered the call. The order in which the animals appear was determined by each animals arrival to the meeting with the Jade Emperor.

Obverse

A retriever dog is found on the obverse side of the 8 Gram Gold Lunar Dog Multigram Bars. The retriever is depicted in a seated position with its tongue hanging out of its mouth and its dog house just visible behind its figure in the background. Above the head of the dog is the Chinese symbol for a dog.

Reverse

There is a dog house found on the reverse face of 8 Gram Gold Lunar Dog Multigrams. This design element captures the same visuals from the obverse side, but from an opposing angle. Instead of looking at the face of the adult retriever and seeing its dog house behind, you are now looking at the front of the dog house with the adult retrievers back to you. Inside the door of that dog house is a small retriever puppy lying down. Inscriptions on this face of the gold bar include PAMP Suisse in the mint logo, 1 g Gold 999.9, and the assayers mark.

History

The Year of the Dog is the 11th in the 12-year cycle of the Zodiac. PAMP Suisse offers this design for continuous production, but only through the 2018 calendar year for the Chinese Lunar Calendar.
