The image depicts the bald eagle with the national heraldic shield on its chest, arrows in one talon, an olive branch in the other, and a cluster of 13 stars above its head.

History

Charles E. Barbers designs were eventually chosen for the dime, quarter, and half dollar after a US Mint and Treasury Department art contest failed to deliver any results that were acceptable. Barbers designs were featured on these denominations until 1916 when all were replaced by unique designs for each denomination. Adolph A. Weinman submitted winning designs for the dime and half dollar, while Hermon Atkins MacNeil developed the new quarter design.
