Since 1982, the United States Mint has been producing commemorative gold and silver coins as part of its modern effort at producing coins for collectors. The US Mint had previously issued commemorative coins from 1848 to 1954, but starting in the 1930s the quality and collectible nature of the coins came into question among collectors. Provident Metals now offers perfect condition $5 US Mint Commemorative Gold Coins to you for purchase online.

  • Issued a face value of $5 (USD) by the government of the United States.
  • Obverse and reverse designs vary by coin and program.
  • Please keep in mind you might get several coins with the same dates and designs when buying more than one.

This particular listing is a random year option from Provident Metals. We are not able to guarantee the date mark and design of the coin you receive, nor can we say in advance if the PCGS or NGC issued the certification. You can rest assured each $5 US Mint Gold Coin in this listing has 90% gold content and a perfect Mint State 70 certification.

Designs

The United States Mint issues commemorative gold coins with one-time designs marking a particular occasion, honoring a certain event, or celebrating an individual and their life achievements. The designs will, as such, vary based on the design program the coin comes from. Examples include the 2007 Jamestown Gold Coins honoring the 400th anniversary of the founding of the English settlement at Jamestown.

Other examples include the more recent 2019 Apollo 11 coins and 2019 American Legion coins. These series marked the 50th anniversary of NASA landing mankind on the Moon and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the American Legion by US service members located in Paris during World War I.

History

By the 1930s, the US Mint was issuing commemorative coins with dubious designs and multiple issues, lowering the value of the coins in the eyes of collectors. With demand slumping further by 1954, President Eisenhower allowed one last commemorative strike and vetoed all others. The US Mint would not resume commemorative coining until 1982 when the 250th Anniversary George Washington Half Dollar was struck.
