Obverse

The obverse side of 5 Pesos Mexican Silver Coins comes with the national coat of arms. The Mexican coat of arms featured here includes a golden eagle on the perch of a prickly pear cactus with its wings raised behind it. The eagle uses its beak and talons to control a snake it is trying to devour. Beneath the seal is a wreath of oak and laurel. An inscription above reads Estados Unidos Mexicanos.

Reverse

On the reverse field of the 5 Pesos Mexican Cuauhtemoc Silver Coin is an effigy of the former Aztec Emperor. This left-profile bust of Cuauhtemoc is loosely based on the Bust of Cuauhtemoc that stands in el Zocalo in Mexico City. The portrait captures Cuauhtemoc wearing the traditional headdress of the emperor and is accompanied by inscriptions of 30 Gramos, Ley 0.900, Mo as the Mexican Mint mark, a date mark, and Cinco Pesos.

History

Cuauhtemoc was the last Aztec Emperor. Elected by the highest nobility in 1520, he summoned all the help he could from allied tribes of the Aztec to try and defend his capital and his people from Spanish Conquistadors. Ultimately, he was captured by Hernan Cortes and the Spanish as he tried to flee from Tenochtitlan. He was held captive by Cortes for nearly four years before Cortes had him put to death for allegedly plotting to kill Cortes.
