Although modern US gold coins are limited to bullion specimens like the American Gold Eagle and American Gold Buffalo, the United States Mint used to produce gold coins for circulation each year in various denominations. This continued until 1933. Though its been more than a century since some of the designs of these previous gold coins were produced, you can still find them as collectible pieces that survived the 1933 cessation of gold coin production in the US. Now, Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins are available to you for purchase online from Provident Metals.
All Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins in this listing earned Mint State 61 certifications from either the PCGS or NGC. Any coin with an MS61 grade exhibits diminished mint luster. You will also see clusters of large and small contact marks with hairlines that are very noticeable and possible scuff marks.
The obverse side of Pre-33 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins includes a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Known as the coronet design, Liberty is shown here with most of her hair collected in a loose bun at the back of her head and a coronet that reads Liberty at the front of her head. 13 stars surround her figure and the date mark is below. Please note available date marks in this listing run from 1839 to 1907.
On the reverse face of Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins is the heraldic eagle of the United States. The introduction of the Liberty Gold Half Eagle design in 1839 brought with it the change from 5 D to note the face value to Five D. Liberty Gold Half Eagle coins produced from 1839 to 1866 do not have the national motto in the design on this side. Coins issued from 1866 to 1907 have In God We Trust on a ribbon held in the bald eagles beak.
Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle coins were designed by Christian Gobrecht and marked the longest running design in the Half Eagle gold release.
