Obverse

Designed in 1839 by Christian Gobrecht, this design on the Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin is known as the Liberty Head or Coronet Head image. The left-profile Liberty bust on the obverse of the coin features Liberty with her hair up in a loose bun and a coronet crown on her head that reads Liberty. There is a ring of 13 stars around her bust and the date mark is at the bottom.

Reverse

An American bald eagle in the heraldic eagle design is found on the reverse of the Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins. The heraldic eagle has the US national shield on its chest with an olive branch in one talon and the arrows of war in the other. Coins struck in this release from 1839 to 1865 have only United States of America and Five D inscribed on this side. All coins issued from 1866 to 1907 include the added banner with In God We Trust above the eagle.

History

The Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin was designed by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1840 to 1844. The Liberty Half Eagle was the only design in the series to be struck at seven different US Mint facilities: Philadelphia, Dahlonega, Charlotte, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver.
