Obverse

The obverse face of 5 Francs Belgium Silver Coins bears a bust of the reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Belgium. Known as the King of the Belgians, the bust youll find on this face of the coins will be that of King Leopold I or King Leopold II. The elder Leopold reigned from 1831 to 1865, with his son Leopold II appearing on the coins from 1865 to 1876 when the 5 Francs coins were removed from production.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 5 Francs Belgium Silver Coins, you will find one of two images present. During the reign of King Leopold I, coins in this series issued from 1832 to 1865 had a simple design of a five-pointed star with a wreath of oak leaves surrounding the element. When King Leopold II ascended the throne, the design changed to feature the coat of arms for the Kingdom of Belgium. This design features a crowned shield with a single star in the upper-left and a central shield with a rampant lion. The shield itself is supported on either side by a lion.

History

5 Francs Belgian Silver Coins were introduced by the Kingdom of Belgium when it gained independence from France. Francs began to debut in 1830 following independence, with the 5 Francs denomination actively struck from 1832 to 1876. The coins remained in circulation as an acceptable currency into the 20th century.
