Major League Baseball (MLB) includes 30 teams, with 15 teams in the American League (AL) and 15 teams in the National League (NL). The NL was founded in 1876, and the AL was established in 1901. Although the two leagues signed a national agreement in 1903, they did not legally merge into one organization until 2000. Baseball’s history goes even further back, with the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first professional baseball team, founded in 1869.
