The Lunar Series III program at Perth Mint started in 2020, marking the third series of their well-loved lunar-themed collections. Each year, Perth Mint expands its offerings. In 2024, they introduced 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz Colorized Gold Coins, adding more variety for collectors. Currently, the 2024 Colorized Australian Lunar Dragon 1/20 oz Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.

The 2024 Colorized Australian Lunar Dragon 1/20 oz Gold Coins are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins feature stunning layers of colorized lacquer on the reverse design of the Chinese dragon. Alongside the 1/20 oz coins, there are 1/10 oz coins available, making these the only colorized gold issues for the Year of the Dragon.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2024 Colorized Australian Lunar Dragon Gold Coins features Queen Elizabeth II. This effigy, designed by Jody Clark in 2015 for The Royal Mint, shows the Queen at 89 years old, wearing the George IV State Diadem. It served as the final portrait of Her Majesty during her reign. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 1952-2022, AUSTRALIA, 5 DOLLARS, and 1/20 OZ 9999 AU.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 2024 Colorized Lunar Dragon 1/20 oz Gold Coin showcases a Chinese dragon. The dragon is depicted in a right-profile relief with a coiled body. The design is colorized with shades of blue and orange on the dragons body, and the waves beneath its feet are also colorized. The field includes stylized clouds. The inscriptions include DRAGON, 2024, the P125 mint mark, and the Chinese symbol for the dragon.

History

Clouds are another element closely tied to dragons in Chinese lore. Dragons were thought to be able to conceal themselves within clouds or create them as they moved through the sky. In Chinese culture, the dragon holds a paramount position as a symbol of imperial authority and divine power. It represents the emperor and the male principle in nature, embodying strength and auspiciousness.
