The obverse of the 2024 British Tudor Beasts The Tudor Dragon Gold Coins features a bust of King Charles III. This portrait was created for The Royal Mint in late 2022, depicting His Majesty in left-profile relief without a crown. Inscriptions read CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., and 100 POUNDS.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2024 Tudor Beasts The Tudor Dragon 1 oz Gold Coin, you will see the image of the Tudor Dragon. This design shows the seated Tudor Dragon supporting a shield with the Beaufort Portcullis. Both symbols were used by the House of Tudor to establish their legitimate claim to the throne after the Wars of the Roses. The inscriptions on this side read TUDOR DRAGON, 1 OZ, FINE GOLD, 999.9, and 2024.
History
The Tudor Dragon is a notable symbol, often depicted alongside the Beaufort Portcullis in Tudor heraldry. The Royal Mint’s design includes a shield with the Beaufort Portcullis, a symbol originally linked to the Beaufort family. The Beaufort Portcullis features prominently in the Henry VII Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey, built between 1503 and 1516. It appears in various forms throughout the chapel’s intricate fan vaulting and decorations.
