A first-time collaboration between the Swarovski jewelry company and the Austrian Mint, the Eyes of the World coin series is designed to recreate the experience of eye-to-eye contact with animals from all over the world who have inspired the myths and legends of humanity. This includes the bear, which Native Americans believed had great strength and wisdom, and even instructing humans in medicine and healing. Native Americans of the Great Plains propitiated the spirit of a bear before hunting it, performing a bear dance to seek supernatural protection and observing a range of taboos on the trail in order to reconcile the animal’s soul with death.
