History

Among the largest placoderms of all time, the species Dunkleosteus terrelli could reach a length of over 30 feet while weighing up to 4000 tons. In addition to D. terrelli, scientists also recognize nine other species in the Dunkleosteus genus. The fossil remains of this placoderm was first discovered by Jay Terrell along the cliffs near Lake Erie. The genus itself is named after paleontologist and curator of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, David Dunkle.
