Since 1987, the British Britannia Series has been available from the Royal Mint. Available in gold, silver, and platinum, the series has offered a steady design of Britannia on the reverse and Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Following Her Majestys passing in September 2022, the 2023 Britannia is the final one with the Queens effigy. There’s no time to waste either as the Royal Mint plans to strike Queen Elizabeth II Britannias for just a few weeks before changing over to a new King Charles III portrait. Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of 2023 British Britannia Silver Coins. Her Majesty is shown here in the right-profile effigy Jody Clark created in 2015. The Queen is shown at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. Inscriptions on this side include 2 POUNDS, ELIZABETH II, and D.G. REG. F.D.
Reverse
For the reverse design of 2023 Britannia 1 oz Silver Coins, the mint features a design from Philip Nathan. The image shows Britannia with a trident in her right hand and a shield in her left with the Union Jack emblazoned on it. Inscriptions on this face read BRITANNIA, 2023, 1 OZ, and 999 FINE SILVER.
History
Queen Elizabeth II has graced the obverse of the coins in this series since the 1987 introduction of the program. The 2023 will be the last with Her Majestys effigy. The reverse of British Britannia Coins features four security elements that include a latent security image, motion lines in the background, tincture lines on the Union Jack, and micro text around the design.
