In this inaugural portrait of his reign, King Charles III appears without a crown, emphasizing a deliberate departure from the previous monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. Reverse
Philip Nathan’s enduring depiction of Britannia graces the reverse side of the 2023 Britannia 1/10 oz Platinum Coin. Introduced in 1987, this revered portrayal showcases Britannia in her full stature, firmly holding a trident and an olive branch, while confidently clutching a shield. The inscriptions read BRITANNIA, 2023, and 1/10 OZ 999.5 PLATINUM.

Britannia’s origins can be traced back to the Roman era, where she was portrayed as a goddess representing the province of Britannia. She appeared on Roman coins during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. Over time, the image of Britannia evolved and became associated with the British Empire and British identity.
