Obverse
The obverse side of the 2023 American Eagle Gold Coin depicts Lady Liberty in front-facing relief. This depiction of Liberty was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and shows her figure with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Sun rays silhouette her figure on the horizon with the U.S. Capitol Building in the background and stars around the field. Inscriptions on this side include LIBERTY and 2023.
Reverse
On the reverse face of 2023 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins, you will find the all-new bald eagle depiction. Created in 2020 by Jennie Norris, this design made its debut in mid-2021 and shows the head of the eagle in left-profile relief. Inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD 10 DOLLARS.
History
In 2021, the American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin surged to a mintage of 162,000 coins, the highest recorded in this weight in the 21st century. This was more than a four-fold increase compared to just two years earlier in 2019 when the 1/4 oz gold coin set its third-lowest mintage on record.
