In 2021, these coins received a first-ever design overhaul that saw the reverse image from John Mercanti replaced by a new depiction of the American bald eagle. Obverse
Walking Liberty is featured on the obverse side of 2022-W Proof American Eagle Silver Coins. This effigy shows the left-profile image of Liberty draped in the American flag as she walks toward the sun on the horizon. Her left hand carries branches of oak and laurel, with her right hand extended toward the sun. The field includes inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 2022, and the AW initials of Adolph A. Weinman, the designer of the Walking Liberty image.
Reverse
An American bald eagle is shown in the reverse design of 2022-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. This image shows the bald eagle in left-profile relief as it descends through the design field. The eagle has its wings flexed behind its back with its talons outstretched and clutching a large oak branch. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ FINE SILVER ONE DOLLAR, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.
History
Proof American Eagle Silver Coins now feature a design on the reverse from Emily Damstra. Ms. Damstra is a member of the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program and has previously worked with both the United States Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint on major bullion coin program designs.
