History

Aphrodite was a complicated figure in ancient Greek myth, and her seeming contradictions served as a wealth of material for myths and stories. She was a goddess of love and lust, pleasure and beauty who protected courtesans and served as patroness of life’s most delightful luxuries. By the same token, she could represent violent passion and the excesses to which it could drive both men and gods: wise mortals were wary of earning her wrath, the Spartans called her “Aphrodite the Warlike,” and she bore epithets like “Killer of Men” and “Gravedigger.” It all made her utterly compelling both to the ancient Greek imagination and to the modern one, making her a perfect subject for the Perth Mint’s landmark Gods of Olympus series.
