From 1986 to 1992, the San Francisco Mint issued the Proof American Eagle Silver Coins with an S mint mark. During this same time period, the San Francisco Mint issued the BU American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin, though it produced these coins for a longer period covering the years 1986 to 1998.

History

Following the end of S-Proof American Eagle production in 1992, the San Francisco Mint would not issue another Proof American Eagle Silver Coin until 2011. In 2018, the US Mint introduced a new S-Proof American Eagle that proved so popular with collectors that the mint has continued limited annual production of the coins each year since then.
