The Chinese zodiac calendar has a unique backstory. According to Chinese folklore, the Jade Emperor called a meeting with twelve different species of animals. The animals in the lunar calendar are placed in certain spots based on the order in which they arrived to meet the emperor. While the rat placed first, the tiger was third in the race.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse face of every coin in this series. She is shown in her tiara, a formal gown, and jewelry. The image was designed by the Royal Mints Jody Clark, and it is the fifth and most recent depiction of Her Majesty for use on coins. This effigy was designed in 2015. Clarks initials can be found on this side of the coin.

Her Majesty was born during the Year of the Tiger, making this release extra special. Around the Queens image, you will find the lunar calendar wheel, which displays the tiger at the very top.

Reverse

A confident tiger is walking over a pine branch on the reverse face of these coins. In the image, the large tiger is shown with its mouth slightly open. You can also find inscriptions on this face of the coins, including the Chinese symbol for Tiger, Year of the Tiger, and the weight and purity of the coin.

History

The Royal Australian Mint is located in Canberra, Australia, and it is the first Australian mint to open that wasnt associated with the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom. Opening in 1965, the mint is known for producing the countrys circulation coinage, as well as specialty collectible coins.
