History
The World Cup dates back to 1928, when FIFA president Jules Rimet pushed for a worldwide soccer tournament after seeing how well the sport was received during the Olympics. Uruguay was chosen as the first host country, with the inaugural World Cup beginning in July 1930. The first two games were played at the same time, with France and the United States emerging victorious. However, it was Uruguay who ultimately won the first World Cup championship when they defeated Argentina 4-2 before nearly 100,000 spectators.
