History
The New Zealand Mint’s Disney Princess collection celebrates a decades-long history of famous heroines who starred in some of the most influential animated features ever made. With this precious pure silver collectible, they celebrate a Princess who transformed the whole idea of that title. Previous Princesses like Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora, for all their charm, didn’t really play an active role in their own fates: ultimately their role was to await a Prince. Ariel, by contrast, sought out her Prince and her destiny and transformed the Disney formula in so doing: this retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen fable became the first animated “blockbuster” and won near-universal acclaim from critics and audiences.
