The East India Company remasters some of British history’s most iconic coins for its Masterpiece Collection, introducing the masters of years past to new audiences in the form of some of the world’s most extraordinary pure silver collectibles. William Wyon, the creator of famous Victorian Era coin designs like “Una and the Lion” and the long-circulating “Young Head” coin. For the monarch’s tenth anniversary on the throne in 1847, he created the “Gothic Crown” effigy that featured on the 2022 Proof St. Helena Gothic Crown Portrait 1 Kilo Silver Coin.
Coin Highlights:
The 2022 Proof St. Helena Gothic Crown Portrait Silver Coin provides fine engraving and the brilliant mirrored backgrounds of a proof-finish collectible and contains just over 32 Troy ounces of pure silver. Provident Metals fully insures each coin in shipment against loss or damage; it arrives in a luxury display case with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Obverse
The recently unveiled Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II features on the coin’s obverse side, only the fifth image of its kind to appear on Commonwealth coinage since the Queen’s coronation in 1952. It is accompanied by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “D.G. REGINA F.D.,” “ST. HELENA,” “5 POUNDS,” and “2022.”
Reverse
A reproduction of William Wyon’s “Gothic Crown” effigy of Queen Victoria features on the coin’s reverse side. It’s accompanied by inscriptions of the monarch’s legend, “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA” and “BRITANNIAR: REG: FID: DEF.”
History
William Wyon’s “Gothic Crown” coin design was a new approach to coin design for him, departing from his customary Neoclassical style to take aboard the influence of then-popular Neo-Gothic art (on the original coin, Scottish artist William Dyce matched that style choice for the reverse design). The Masterpiece Collections reproduction of his work represents a combination of modern minting technology with the kind of hand craftsmanship Wyon himself might have recognized.
