The first Pride parade in London took place in 1972, and over the years, events that were originally about asserting the right of LGBTQ+ people to exist have grown into celebrations of the progress of equal rights. As a result, Pride has moved from the margins to the mainstream, with the United Kingdom seeing more than 150 events nationwide and attendance figures of up to 1.5 million people in London as the 50th Anniversary dawns. The Royal Mint joins in the celebration with the very first British coin made specifically to honor the LGBTQ+ community, the 2022 Proof British 50 Years of Pride 8 Gram Silver Coin.
The 2022 Proof British 50 Years of Pride Silver Coin features the art and design work of Dominique Holmes, a seven-sided pure silver collectible that presents Pride artwork and messaging along with brilliant, proof-quality mirrored backgrounds. Each coin comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and is packaged in a luxury presentation case.
An official effigy of Elizabeth II appears on the coin’s obverse side. It’s framed by the inscriptions “50 PENCE,” “2022,” “ELIZABETH II,” and “D.G. REG. F.D.”
The reverse side features five rainbows in the colors of the original rainbow flag of Pride. They are inscribed with the words “PRIDE,” “PROTEST,” “UNITY,” “VISIBILITY” and “EQUALITY,” while below them is a five-colored chevron symbolizing progress and inclusion for more marginalized LGBTQ+ people. It’s all accompanied by ornamental scrollwork and the inscription “50” above.
The evolution of Pride as a tradition reflects the evolution of the overall struggle of LGBTQ+ people for equality. The original spark was struck at New York’s Stonewall Inn, where the community rose up against police misconduct in 1969, and it quickly began to spread as communities facing similar problems saw glimmers of hope, and began to organize. The cause has come a long way in fifty years after the first Pride event in London: Pride has gone mainstream, and the very existence of this gorgeous pure silver collectible attests to it. In a very real sense, this coin is itself a piece of history.
