History

For at least a decade prior to the American Revolution, the tax demands of Britain and her incessant wars during the 18th century led to protests against the Crown in the Thirteen Colonies of America from at least a decade before the beginning of the War of Independence. When the HMS Gaspeemet its fate in 1772, it may have been harrying an anti-tax protest group called the Sons of Liberty. If so, its targets proved to be more popular than anticipated, as the group that burned the ship would entirely escape a royal commission sent to apprehend them.
