The first issue of his solo title, Superman #1, came out in 1939 and kicked off the multi-decade career of one of the most famous characters in all of popular culture. Obverse
The obverse side of the coin features an official effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II that verifies it as legal tender. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “2022” and “2 DOLLARS,” with a turning page leaf engraved at the bottom left.
Reverse
The reverse side of this coin shows a full-color mini-replica of the cover of Superman #1. It’s colored on all four sides in order to mimic a comic book’s spine and pages.
History
The first solo run of the archetypal first superhero was a landmark entry in comic the history of comic books. It revealed never-before-seen details in the iconic backstory of the Man of Steel, telling the story of the explosion of Krypton and the sending of an exiled infant to Earth on a rocket. It introduced Pa and Ma Kent, as well as the hero’s secret identity as Clark Kent, a mild-mannered investigative reporter, and it provided a platform for Superman’s adventures for decades to come. Superman #1 comics have become collectibles in their own right, making it a milestone worthy of celebration by the New Zealand Mint’s COMIX collection.
