Obverse

The DRC’s official coat of arms dominates the coin’s obverse side along with the three-word motto “Justice,” “Paix,” “Travail.” It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “Republique Democratique du Congo,” “20 Francs,” and “1 oz Ag .999.”

Reverse

The gorilla-like skeleton of Gigantopithecus influences the artist’s rendition of the giant ape on the coin’s reverse side, shown in a forest setting with a lake in the background, accompanied by the inscription of its name, the issuing year “2022,” and a timespan in which it lived. The coin’s rim features an inscribed timeline of prehistoric epochs along with the inscription “Prehistoric Life.”

History

The study of prehistoric wildlife species, or rather of the remains they left behind, has done a great deal to shape human knowledge of everything from the ancient animals themselves to the environments in which they lived, and by extension how climate and life interact in the present day. Gigantopithecus, thought to be the largest ape species that ever existed, is a perfect example: a giant ape that dominated tropical forest environments for millions of years before a shift in climate diminished the habitats they depended on and doomed them to extinction.
