The traditional symbolic imagery of the ancient Chinese zodiac and the lunar calendar associated with it are known around the world, but one of the most unique ways of celebrating that imagery has been a series of high-relief coins struck by, of all countries, the Republic of Chad. History:
It may seem unusual at first glance to associate a republic in West Africa with coins featuring the traditional Chinese zodiac, but the Republic of Chad has been issuing limited mintages of just such coins for several years in honor of close economic ties between the two countries. The latest celebrates the third animal of the Chinese zodiac, the tiger, along with Wood as a classical Chinese element: the kind of two-part formula that fixes any given year’s place in the 60-year cycle of the ancient “stem-and-branch” calendar of China. It’s according to that calendar that 2022 is the Year of the Tiger in the Forest, which provides this coin’s beautiful artistic theme.
Obverse:
The coin’s obverse side features detailed artwork of a tiger stepping out through the fronds of rainforest vegetation and emerging from an intricately-sculpted frame. It carries the inscription “Tiger in the Forest” in both Chinese and English writing, and a red stamp that indicates the commemoration of the 39th year of China’s traditional sexagenary cycle.
Reverse:
On the coin’s reverse side, a Chadian coat-of-arms is depicted on a field of tiger stripes, surrounded by the inscriptions “Republique du Tchad 2022” and “10000 Francs CFA.”
