Sugar maple leaves come from the sugar maple, a species of deciduous tree that is widely distributed across North America. You can find the sugar maple from the west coast of Canada to the regions around Lake of the Woods near the US state of Minnesota. Within the United States, the sugar maple is distributed from Minnesota in the west to Maine in the east, and as far south as Virginia, Tennessee, and Missouri.

Obverse

On the obverse of 2022 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/2 oz Gold Coins is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief wearing earrings and a necklace, but no crown, a first for her portraits on Canadian coins. Designed by Susanna Blunt in 2003, this is the fourth-generation effigy of the Queen to grace Canadian coins. Inscriptions read ELIZABETH II, 20 DOLLARS, and 2022.

Reverse

The reverse face of 2022 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins features an image of the leaf from the sugar maple. The iconic emblem of Canada, the sugar maple leaf is featured with its three main branches off the main stem and several striations and veins throughout the leaf. The inscriptions on this side include CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/2 OZ OR PUR. Both sides of the coin feature radial lines in the background. This security feature was added to the coins in 2015.

History

Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins debuted in 1979, but did not include fractional-ounce coins until 1982. The 1982 release featured 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz options. In 1986, these 1/2 oz gold coins debuted. The 1/20 oz gold coin was released for the first time in 1993 and the most recent was the 1 Gram coin in 2014.
