History

Although Aphrodite is mostly known today as the Greek goddess of love, she had many roles in the ancient world. She was, to be certain, a patroness of love, beauty, and pleasure who provided for the luxuries and delights of life but might also preside over marriage. In some places, her connection with passion and drive made her a goddess of war who bore epithets like “Warlike,” “Gravedigger” and “Killer of Men,” and her wrath was a thing to be feared. And due to the manner of her birth, she could also be worshiped as a goddess of the sea and of sailors.
