The Perth Mint’s popular Gods of Olympus coin series pays tribute to Aphrodite with its sixth entry. Showcasing the goddess of love, beauty and passion in extraordinary high-relief artwork accentuated by a beautiful antiqued finish, this pure silver collectible features the iconic image of Aphrodite rising from the sea foam after a battle between the Titans Kronos and Ouranos. It’s an image that has been reiterated in centuries of Western sculpture and painting, now engraved with stunning detail on the 2022 Antique Tuvalu Gods of Olympus Aphrodite 1 oz Silver Coin, available from Provident Metals.

Obverse
The coin’s obverse side features Ian Rank-Broadley’s famous effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II, confirming it as legal tender of Tuvalu. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “1 oz 9999 Ag,” “2022,” “TUVALU,” “1 DOLLAR,” and “QUEEN ELIZABETH II.”
Reverse
Aphrodite features on the reverse side after rising from the sea foam, seated on Aphrodite’s Rock at Cyprus. She’s clad in flowing robes with a dove perched on one hand, surrounded by scallop shells with a gull and a trio of dolphins in the background, and a swan spreading its wings in the foreground accompanied by the inscription “APHRODITE.”
History
Although Aphrodite is mostly known today as the Greek goddess of love, she had many roles in the ancient world. She was, to be certain, a patroness of love, beauty, and pleasure who provided for the luxuries and delights of life but might also preside over marriage. In some places, her connection with passion and drive made her a goddess of war who bore epithets like “Warlike,” “Gravedigger” and “Killer of Men,” and her wrath was a thing to be feared. And due to the manner of her birth, she could also be worshiped as a goddess of the sea and of sailors. The many facets of her personality have made her a persistent source of fascination for centuries, and an ideal subject for the Gods of Olympus collectibles series.
