After 35 years with the same obverse and reverse design combinations, the US Mint selected a new design for the reverse face in 2020 and debuted it midway through the 35th-anniversary release in 2021. Highlights:
The all-new bald eagle design that now features on the coins of the American Eagle Gold Series comes from Jennie Norris. A graphic designer by trade, Ms. Norris is also a professor at the University of Arizona and a member of the United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program. Her new depiction of the bald eagle beat out 30 other designs to serve as the reverse face of the coins in this series.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2022 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins is an image of Liberty. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it features Liberty in front-facing relief as she strides forward with a torch held up in her right hand and carries an olive branch in her left hand. Sun rays frame her figure from behind and there is a ring of 50 stars around the field. Inscriptions on this side include LIBERTY and 2022.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2022 American Eagle Gold Coin features a depiction of the American bald eagle. This design shows the head of the eagle in left-profile relief. Its physical characteristics, such as its hooked beak and layered plumage, are captured with incredible detail. The inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD 10 DOLLARS.
History
The American Eagle Gold Coins originally featured a depiction of a family of bald eagles on the reverse. This design was used from 1986 through mid-2021 and was designed by Miley Busiek as an exclusive for this series. Following the mid-2021 switch to the new design from Jennie Norris, Miley Busieks design was retired.
