In 2021, the United States Mint is going to celebrate the 35th anniversary of its American Eagle Gold and Silver Coins with new images of the American bald eagle. The reverse face of each coin comes with a distinctive bald eagle design, each of which is going to be replaced with new imagery in 2021. Those new designs have been selected, but the US Mint is not ready to strike the new designs yet. As such, the 2021 release of Proof American Eagle Gold Coins will come with two different reverse designs.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse side of the 2021-W Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coin. Her figure is found in front-facing relief as she walks away from Washington D.C. Guiding the nation into the future, she carries a torch in one hand to light the way forward for the nation and an olive branch in her other hand to symbolize hopes for peace in the future. The US Capitol Building is at her feet with rays of sunshine emerging in the background field. A circle of 50 stars surrounds the entire design element. Inscriptions include Liberty, 2021, and W.

Reverse

American bald eagles feature on the reverse field of 2021-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coins. This design was created exclusively for the American Eagle Gold Coin in 1986 by Miley Busiek. It depicts a male eagle flying over the nest as a female eagle guards a young hatchling within the nest. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, In God We Trust, E Pluribus Unum, and 1/10 oz Fine Gold – 5 Dollars.

History

The Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coin has the third-highest mintage recorded in the collection since the 1986 debut of the series. From 1988 to 2007, the 1/10 oz coin was the best-seller among the four in the Proof American Eagle Gold Series. Since that time, it has remained the second best-seller behind the 1 oz gold coin.
