Obverse
Lady Liberty features on the obverse side of 2021 Burnished American Eagle Gold Coins. The design comes with an image of Libertys full-length figure in front-facing relief with a torch held aloft in her right hand as she carries an olive branch in her left. There are sun rays on the horizon behind her figure and a ring of stars around the field. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, 2021, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.
Reverse
An American bald eagle is found on the reverse field of the 2021-W Burnished American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins. The design featured here was created by Jennie Norris and shows the head of the American bald eagle in left-profile relief with incredible layers of detail. Inscriptions on this face read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 50 DOLLARS.
History
From 1986 to mid-2021, the American Eagle Gold Coins featured a depiction of a family of bald eagles on the reverse. This design from Miley Busiek was last used on 2021 Type 1 coins. Starting in July 2021, the US Mint rolled out Type 2 coins with this new design from Jennie Norris. While the BU and Proof coins were issued in Type 1 and Type 2 versions, only the Type 2 design was offered in the Burnished American Eagle Gold release in 2021. That makes this coin the first of its type in 2021.
