Obverse

A portrait of Paul Kruger is depicted on the obverse side of 2021 South African 1 oz Gold Krugerrand. This bust of Paul Kruger is based on an original design from the 1890s that featured on previous gold coins of South African republics. This version of the portrait was modified in 1984 and is a work of art completed by Otto Schultz. The legend around the portrait features the name of the nation of issue in both Afrikaans and English as Suid-Afrika and South Africa.

Reverse

The Springbok antelope is found on the reverse face of 2021 South African Gold Krugerrand Coins. This design has also featured on both South African Pound coins previously issued and on modern Rand denominations. The coins design was also modernized in 1984 and the design comes from Coert Steynberg. Inscriptions on the legend around this design field read Krugerrand, 2021, and Fynegoud 1 oz Fine Gold.

History

At one point in time during the 1980s, the Krugerrand Gold Coin was so prominent in the precious metals industry that it represented more than 90% of gold bullion coins available to investors. The South African Krugerrand Gold Coin uses 22-karat gold, much like the American Eagle Gold Coin, but rather than a mixture of copper and silver in the metallic combination, the Krugerrand uses 8.33% copper and no other metal.
