Born Saul of Tarsus, the man who would go on to become Saint Paul, or Paul the Apostle, was originally a persecutor of Christians. The early disciples of Jesus Christ had to live in fear of Saul of Tarsus because he would travel the roads between Jerusalem and Damascus to find Christians, arrest them, and bring them back to Jerusalem for punishment.

History

Saul of Tarsus became Paul the Apostle after he was blinded by a bright light upon encountering Jesus on the road between Jerusalem and Damascus. He would go on to become a powerful missionary for Christianity and is credited with founding several Christian communities in Asia Minor and Europe in the 40s and 50s AD.
