The United States Mint is celebrating the centennial of the last release of Morgan Dollars in 1921 with a five-coin release of 2021 bullion Morgan Dollar Silver Coins. Three of those coins will be issued by the Philadelphia Mint, with two bearing historic mint marks in honor of now-closed mints. The other two coins will be struck by mints that are still in operation as part of the honorary issue. Obverse
Liberty is shown in left-profile relief on the obverse side of 2021-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins. The design shows Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap on her head with a coronet and wreath crown also atop her head. Anna Willess Williams sat through portrait sessions with George T. Morgan as the inspiration for this design. Inscriptions on this field of the coin read E Pluribus Unum along the top and 2021 along the bottom with 13 stars flanking the effigy of Liberty.
Reverse
Morgans design of the heraldic eagle of the United States is found in the reverse design of the 2021-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin. This version of the national emblem includes only the front-facing bald eagle as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The eagle is framed around the bottom half by a wreath. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar, and the S mint mark from the San Francisco Mint.
History
The San Francisco Mint was the only mint other than the Philadelphia Mint to strike the Morgan Dollar every year it was issued. The lowest mintage from the San Francisco Mint came in 1893 when it issued just 100,000 Morgan Dollars. The final issue in 1921 was the highest at 21.695 million.
