Two US Mint branch facilities worked together in the production of this 2-Coin Designer Set. The Type 1 coins with the original heraldic eagle reverse were struck by the West Point Mint and bear W mint marks on the reverse. The new Type 2 coins with the brand-new eagle design were issued by the San Francisco Mint with S mint marks on the reverse.

Obverse

On the obverse of the two coins in the 2021 Reverse Proof American Eagle Silver Designer Set is Walking Liberty. Designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, this historic image first featured on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar in circulation until 1947. The image depicts Liberty as she walks toward the sun on the horizon with her figure draped in the American flag. The coins have inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2021 on this side. Please note, the Type 2 coin has the addition of Weinmans original AW signature mark inscribed on the field.

Reverse

The reverse side of the coins from the 2021 Reverse Proof American Eagle Silver 2-Coin Designer Set features the heraldic eagle on the Type 1 coin and the new soaring eagle on the Type 2 coin. The heraldic eagle features a bald eagle supporting the US national shield while clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. There are 13 stars over the head of the eagle. The Type 2 coin features the new design from Emily Damstra with an eagle soaring into view with its wings flexed and its talons clutching a large oak branch. Inscriptions on both coins are the same, though arranged differently to accommodate the designs. These include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, and ONE DOLLAR. As mentioned above, the Type 1 coin has the W mint mark on this side, while the Type 2 coin has the S mint mark.

History

Emily Damstra created the new reverse design featured on the 2021 Type 2 coins. Going forward from 2022, this is the only design element you will find on American Eagle Silver Coins. This set is one of your final opportunities to get the original Type 1 design on a new coin.
