Obverse
The obverse of 2021 Proof Mexican Libertad Gold Coins comes with a depiction of Winged Victory. Based on the ancient mythological goddess of victory, Victoria, she is known as the Angel of Independence in Mexico and is closely associated with the Mexican war of independence from the early 19th century. Her figure stands here at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. Her right hand is extended and holds a laurel wreath, while her left hand carries broken chains. Inscriptions read 1 ONZA, ORO PURO, 2021 LEY .999, and the OM mint mark of the Mexican Mint.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 2021 Proof Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin is an image of the coat of arms of Mexico. Unlike the other weights in this series, the 1 oz coin has the modern seal in the center of the design field with a total of 10 historic versions of the same seal around the edge of the design field. The modern seal includes an oak-and-laurel wreath around it, with ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS engraved above.
History
The 1 oz coin in the series was introduced in 2005 alongside the new 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins. The Mexican Mint had previously released Proof Mexican Libertad Gold Coins with a 1/2 oz weight in 1989 and a 1/4 oz weight in 2004.
