History
Gandalfs character is a unique one in the Lord of the Rings. As a Maiar, he is an immortal spirit who occupies Middle Earth in a physical body. He can be killed in battle, as happens to Gandalf the Grey when the Balrog kills him in Moria. However, he is later sent back to complete his mission, this time as Gandalf the White who is the leader of the Istari order of wizards.
