History

Mulan first appeared in a 300-word ballad during the Northern Dynasties in China. In the tale, Mulan protects her father by dressing up as a man and taking his place in the Chinese Army.

Some iterations relate to her true identity being revealed, while others depict her returning home with the secret intact. Either way, the core themes remain consistent in every version of Mulan.
