History
Like all of the Imperial Eggs, the Pelican was created as an Easter gift by the House of Faberge. Emperor Nicholas II commissioned two eggs per year, one for his wife Alexandra, and the other for his mother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna. The Pelican egg was presented to his mother in 1898, with the image of the bird feeding her young meant to symbolize maternal love.
