Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse of 2021 New Zealand $2 Niue Hawksbill Turtle Silver Coins. This is the fourth-generation design from the Royal Mint of England. Created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this effigy of the Queen captures her in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include ELIZABETH II, NIUE, TWO DOLLARS, and 2021.

Reverse

A hawksbill turtle is shown swimming through the South Pacific in the reverse design of the 2021 New Zealand $2 Niue Hawksbill Turtle Silver Coin. This depiction shows the turtle from above so that you can see its ornate shell with its overlapping segments. The turtle swims through the shallow, bubbling waters of the South Pacific as the water churns around it. There is a small sliver on this face of the coin that reads TURTLE. Beneath the image of the turtle are inscriptions of FINE SILVER .999 1 OZ.

History

The New Zealand Hawksbill Series debuted in 2010 as the Fiji Taku. The series featured the same reverse design at that time, with the lone exception being an inscription of TAKU instead of TURTLE on the coins. Taku is the Fijian term for the hawksbill turtle. From 2010 to 2012, the coins featured this effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, but in 2013, the Fiji Taku featured the national coat of arms. The 2014 shift to the Niue Hawksbill Turtle resulted in the return of the Queens effigy to the obverse.
