History

The movement toward Mexican independence technically started in Spain in 1808 when Napoleon Bonaparte of France invaded. He forced the abdication of King Charles IV and touched off a legitimacy crisis in the rule of the crown that reached all the way to New Spain, what Mexico was known as at the time. Throughout the next 13 years, a political and cultural conflict would mix with armed combat in Mexicos effort to gain independence. It was finally successful in 1821.
