The Great Britain Sovereign is an important gold bullion coin from the Royal Mint of England. Available from 1817, this coin is older in its design concept than any other gold bullion coin currently available from the Royal Mint. The only changes ever made to the Great Britain Sovereign are the obverse portraits of the reigning monarch. Right now, you can buy 2021 Great Britain 1/2 Gold Sovereigns online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective plastic flip!
  • Struck annually again since 1980!
  • Contains .1176 Troy oz of actual gold content in BU condition.
  • Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
  • George and the Dragon design on the reverse.

With your purchase of 2021 Great Britain 1/2 Gold Sovereigns at Provident Metals, you receive coins that are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins in this series come only with individual protective plastic flips.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of 2021 Great Britain Gold Sovereigns. Her Majesty is shown here in the fifth-generation portrait from Jody Clark. Designed in 2015, this effigy of the Queen debuted on British coins with the 2016 date mark. It features the Queen in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown. She is captured at the age of 89 in this portrait. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Elizabeth II and Dei Gra Regina Fid Def.

Reverse

St. George is shown taming the dragon before slaying it in the reverse design of the 2021 Great Britain 1/2 Gold Sovereign. This design was created back in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci and has been widely used on the Great Britain Gold Sovereigns since that time, with the only exception coming during the reign of Queen Victoria. The only inscription featured on this side of the coin is the date mark of 2021.

History

Great Britain Gold Sovereigns were introduced in 1817 following the Great Recoinage of 1816. The Royal Mint of England set about producing Sovereigns with a value of 1 Pound sterling. Later introductions include the Double Sovereign with a 2 Pound sterling value and a 1/2 Sovereign with a 50 Pence value. The coins of the 1/2 Gold Sovereign were available until 1937 and resumed in 1980. The gold coin resumed in 1980, with only the 1981 date mark missing in the series since that point in time. Today, the Great Britain Gold Sovereign is no longer a circulation coin, but rather a bullion coin in the same realm as the British Britannia Gold Coin Series.
